Staying Calm Before an Interview
65
After a long job search, finally getting an interview can be really exciting and also very nerve-racking. You finally have a chance to prove yourself and you don't want to blow it.
The first thing to remember is something that caught their eye in your resume or cover letter. They think you might be the one for the job - now you just have to prove it to them. Don't panic, stay clam. Here's some other tips I found helpful for doing so:
Be Prepared: Research the company online to know alittle more about what you're getting into. Also, look up common interview questions so you know what to expect. Mentally prepare answers to some of the questions so you're not left in the lurch.
Give yourself PLENTY of time: If you haven't been there before and don't have time to do a dry run - double your expected commute time. If it is supposed to take 15 minutes- give yourself 30 minutes (or even more). Then you'll have a safe cushion just in case there's traffic or you get lost. Plus, if you arrive early you can review your materials and take time to calm yourself before you go in. It might even be a good idea to eat a snack- you don't want your stomach grumbling during the interview.
Look Professional: even if think the office will be semi-casual, you should dress nice to show you're serious about the job. Iron your clothes and use tape or a lint roller to remove cat & dog hair. By looking professional you'll look and feel more confident.
Bring a folder to hold important information: Put extra copies of your resume inside, a copy of the job description, a list of questions you want to ask the interviewer (it's always good to have a few questions for them) and a piece of paper to write down important information.
Have the folder as a safety blanket. If you're left waiting in a room you can refresh your memory and also write down your interviewer's name, job details and other tidbits you want to remember.
And Don't Forget: deodorant, your resume, references & their contact information, the office's phone number (just in case you're not sure where to meet, etc.), to turn off your cell phone... and you're all set.
You got this - Good Luck.
